Like a lot of things we have and do in our life, water fountains require a little of attention. Just like watering your plants or giving your animals something to drink, the amount of water is important. With a water fountain the most important part is making sure that the pump stays submerged under the water level, otherwise the pump will burn itself out. The water should be changed every four to six months, depending on the size of your fountain. The smaller the fountain the more often you need to change and add water.
Another thing you will want to do is use distilled water. Tap water contains different minerals and metals that will eventually build up on not only the fountain walls but inside the pumps and tubing that make the water flow thru the fountain. If you decide that that tap water is what you have to use, you should definitely use a product called "PROTEC". It not only helps prevent the build up that tap water does to the fountain, but it is biologically safe for the plants, and for the animals that are bound to take a sip or two from the fountain every now and then. You can get it most pet and pool stores or on the internet, if that's where you like to do most of your shopping. Just follow the instructions that are on the bottle but it's like a drop per gallon of water.
There are other things to think about depending on the type of water feature that you have. Fountains that are made with copper sometimes can produce a growth of algae in the water, even thou it is rare, a product called "FOUNTEC" and you can generally find it at the same places that carry "PROTEC". Another thing to think about is if you have a fountain outside you want to make sure that all the debris is out of the water so your pump doesn't get clogged.
Maintaining the water in your fountain whether it's inside or out doesn't take a lot of time, but it's some thing you need to do if you want to be able to enjoy all the benefits of having a water fountain.
